Principal David Doogan told his students the most important part of ANZAC Day is “We Remember Them”.

Mr Doogan and Mr Cass read through the story of Simpson and his Donkey.

Mr Cass told the students that despite being a medical officer, there were more statues of Simpson than any other person involved in war in Australia.

The students then asked Mr Cass a range of questions about various wars, sacrifice, and what Australian soldiers had to do.

Students then sang Mr Cass the songs they would be singing on ANZAC Day, these being “Spirit of the ANZAC” and “Lest We Forget”.

Mr Cass presented the student leaders with a cheque and a range of ANZAC books, courtesy of the Oakey R.S.L.

“This is probably the last time you’ll see a cheque,” he told the student leaders.

The books were “Why are they marching, Daddy?”, “Simpson and Duffy” and “The Unknown Australian Soldier” by Mary Small, “Gallipoli Medals” by Goldie Alexander, “Walers Go To War” by Vashti Farrer  “Feathered Soldiers” by Vashti Farrer and Mary Small and “Those who Served: Oakey R.S.L” by Janelle Lowry and John Coombs.

Biddeston’s ANZAC Dawn Service will be held at the State School starting at 5.15am, followed by breakfast at 6am.
