Preserving local history

The hard work of Oakey Men’s Shed has helped restore one of Oakey railway station’s 1930s-era luggage trolleys, which had sat derelict for many years.

All aboard the trolley! Oakey Information Centre and Oakey Men’s Shed volunteers join together to celebrate the refurbishment of this slice of Queensland railway history.

Volunteers from the Men’s Shed and the Oakey Information Centre joined to celebrate the achievement in December last year.

Oakey Men’s Shed President John Greenhalgh said the trolley was close to 90 years old.

The men put a total of 200 hours into the project at their Shed on Cory Street.

Men’s Shed member Stephen Clarke said the refurbishment took a significant amount of effort from the team.

“The whole frame was rotted out,” he said.

“It was beaten up, broken, rusted.

“We had to take  the bolts out and made a new frame.

“We sandblasted to get rid of the rust.

“We’ve also put blocks on the bottom, so the tyres don’t go flat.”
