Geoff Dickins, born in 1918, lived in the Oakey district for 70 years and made a significant contribution to the local community.

In World War II, he served his country in Rathmines, Cairns, Karumba, Darwin, Broome, Yampy Sound and Milne Bay along with flying missions in the Coral Sea, New Guinea and Borneo.

From humble beginnings in the corner of the Commercial Hotel, Mr Dickins and wife Judy bought land and established the Oakey Gift shop and arcade, which stands today.

Mr Dickins served on the Oakey Show Society Committee from 1985 to 1994 and as a Jondaryan Shire Councillor from 1984 to 1997.

He was involved with the Jondaryan Woolshed and the Oakey Landcare Group, contributing to the beautification of Oakey Creek and Clean Up Australia campaigns.

A founding supporter of the Oakey ANZAC National Fitness Club in the early 1950s, Mr Dickins remained involved for nearly 40 years and was the only founding member to do so throughout its operation.

He received multiple honours, including the Premier’s Award for Seniors, Lions Club Award, and RSL Australia Remembers.

Mr Dickins is remembered for his long-standing dedication to community service and local civic life in Oakey, including a long-standing involvement with the Oakey Masonic Lodge and as a Justice of the Peace.
