Proud achievement for young cadet
Pittsworth Cadet Warrant Officer Class Two (WO2) Ashford McEwan had the honour of participating in the Reserve Forces Day Recognition Ceremony at King George Square in Brisbane on Sunday.
Many will recognise 16-years-old Ashford as our local bugler, who is always among the first to volunteer his time to assist at local ANZAC Day commemorations alongside his fellow cadets in the 19th Australian Army Cadet Unit (19ACU) Pittsworth.
Those who have heard Ashford’s renditions of the Last Post and Rouse know the calibre of his musical talent, which was brilliantly showcased in Brisbane on the weekend.
He had the privilege of joining with cadets, reservists and veterans from across Queensland in a march from ANZAC Square to Brisbane City Hall, recognising the service and dedication of Australia’s Reservists.
He marched with the 2 Wing Band, and played the Last Post and Rouse during the Recognition Ceremony.
While the 2 Wing Band is primarily an airforce cadet band, some time ago the powers that be made a decision to give army and navy cadets with similar musical abilities, like Ashford, an opportunity to join the band.
This year, five army cadets joined with airforce band members in the march.
Two Wing Bandmaster, Flight Lieutenant (AAFC) Steve Clark, said Ashford’s performance on Sunday was flawless and a stark reminder of the talent coming through the ranks in the cadet program.
“It was only when he was playing the Rouse that I had a lightbulb moment,” Mr Clark said.
“That’s a cadet playing - not an adult, not a full time military defence person or musician.”
Mr Clark described Ashford as a talented young man.
“For his age, he’s a competent young player and a likeable lad,” he said.
What impressed Mr Clark most was the respect and mateship shown by all the band members, both airforce and army cadets, who congratulated Ashford after his solo.
“They heard it all and were acknowledging it,” he said.
“It didn’t matter what uniform they had on.
“It again demonstrates the values of the cadet system of respect and teamwork.”
This was the second year the band was asked to participate in the Reserve Forces Day Recognition Ceremony.
Ashford was approached by Mr Clark about playing the Last Post and Rouse at the ceremony, and there was no hesitation from the McEwan family who swiftly agreed.
Despite being understandably nervous about this solo, Ashford did an exceptional job in front of the crowds that gathered in King George Square in Brisbane.
Since last year, Ashford has participated in more than 10 events with the 2 Wing Band which is based at Shapcott, Redcliffe.
The last few months have been a busy time for the young talent, who recently starred as the protagonist in the Pittsworth State High School musical Footloose.
