Safety upgrades for New England Highway
The Department of Transport and Main Roads has announced a $5 million project that will see safety improvements made on the New England Highway between East Greenmount and the Eight Mile intersection.

The project focuses on designing safety improvements along the New England Highway to improve the driving experience for all road users and minimise the risk of fatal and serious injury crashes.
It involves investigating safety improvements on sections of the New England Highway between Steele Rudd Road, East Greenmount, and the Cunningham Highway intersection at Eight Mile, twelve kilometres north of Warwick.
Key upgrades include removing roadside hazards, extending existing culverts, installing and upgrading guardrails, and adding retro-reflective raised pavement markers.
Additional works will involve road widening at the Nobby Connection Road intersection and introducing a dedicated right-turn lane on the New England Highway for traffic turning into Nobby Connection Road.
There is road work currently going on near this junction, at the entrance to the old Steele Rudd Service Station, which was bought by United Petroleum and has been undergoing very lengthy works.
TMR said community engagement will play a vital role in shaping the design, ensuring feedback informs decisions on these critical safety upgrades.
The project, currently in the detailed design stage, is funded by the Queensland Government under the Targeted Road Safety Program.
