Schools join forces for Science Day
Students from five catchment schools travelled to Oakey State High School to celebrate National Science Week last Thursday.
Ninety Year 6 students from Oakey, Biddeston, Haden, Kulpi and Kingsthorpe arrived at Oakey State High School for a day of Science activities as part of National Science Week.
This year’s theme was “Renewable Energy”.
Thanks to sponsors, Oakey students now have access to multiple Renewable Energy Science kits, which allow them to see how renewable electricity can be made with hands-on activities.
The activities allowed students to record voltage and current produced by solar, wind, water (hydroelectric), hydrogen, biofuels, salt and geothermal.
The students also got the chance to build small chemical batteries using different metals and fruit.
Based on the many experiments completed on the day it was found that the hydrogen fuel cell produced the most amount of consistent current and voltage followed closely by the potato battery with magnesium and copper metals.
Year 6 students were able to apply the content they are learning about in their classrooms by partaking in different experiments to create different energy types.
The day was not possible without the assistance of over 70 Oakey State High School students, Miss Edhouse (OSHS Head of Science), Mrs Beauchamp (OSHS Head of Senior Schooling), Mrs Mahony and Mr Hearn.
