Scouts excel at Operation Nighthawk

Clifton Scout and Venturer Scout Units performed phenomenally at the Darling Downs Nighthawk Challenge earlier in August, finishing in first place in a field that included over 100 teams which travelled to the region from a wide area of Queensland and northern New South Wales.

During this event, teams of Scouts or Venturers traversed through bushland in and around the Crows Nest Showgrounds, with the Scout team leaving at
10 o’clock on Saturday evening and arriving back at camp at 3.30 on Sunday morning.

At each base along the hike, there were activities designed to test the Scouting skills and teamwork of each group.

These activities included communication, orienteering, first aid, general knowledge, construction and survival skills.

Volunteers from the Army’s 7th Signal Regiment and local emergency response teams worked with the Darling Downs Region scouting staff for this event.

They provided long distance communications between bases and stood prepared in case of emergencies.

This was the 40th Operation Nighthawk and many leaders in the scouting movement received awards for their long-term service to this event.

The Clifton Scout Unit’s points for this event positioned them in first place overall from the 101 participating Scout teams from across Queensland and the Northern Rivers area of New South Wales

The Clifton Venturers combined with Stanthorpe Venturers to form a team called StanTon Ventys which placed fifteenth from 58 participating Venturer Scout teams.

This was a momentous achievement for Clifton’s small scout unit.

Clifton Scouts and Venturers would like to thank Rama (Ian Gregory), Yowie (Liz Delvendiep), Bunyip (Brad Jones) and Bagheera (Jacinta Miller) for the dedication and leadership they have exemplified to each member of Clifton Scout Group.
