Scouts on the winners list
Oakey Scouts Group brought back several awards from a trip to Upper Lockyer for the Darling Downs Scouts Standard Camp last weekend, including breaking a 36-year drought by winning the Gateway Trophy.
Scout Group members attended from Drayton, Highfields, Oakey, 2nd Toowoomba, Pittsworth, and Withcott.
The six groups formed six patrols for the weekend, with five patrols competing and one participating.
Over the course of the camp, patrols cooked and served a three-course meal to a judging panel and constructed their own campsite complete with:
• A gateway
• A pitch tent
• A dining fly
• Two dining tables
• Three camp gadgets
• A fire pit
Darling Downs Region Scouts reported that the standard of camping and skills displayed was fantastic, forcing judges to think hard.
For the first time since 1989, Oakey’s Scout Patrol won the Gateway Trophy by building a gate with a hand wash station.
Oakey’s scouts also won the Cooking Trophy, baking a cooked entrée of cheesy pizza (with a pizza base was made from scratch on site by Porscha and Lachlan), a main meal of beef and vegetable stew, and a dessert of sweet damper with mandarin syrup. All meals were cooked over an open fire.

Oakey Scout Leader Taryn Binstead a.k.a. ‘Brumby’ said she was overcome with pride with the results of the patrol.
“Xavier, Gabby, Lachlan, Porscha and Thomas were all so excited to be the first Oakey scouts to win these trophies!” Ms Binstead said.
“They are now excited for more camps to improve on their skills and winning more trophies next year.”
