Shelby Turl’s our pearl

Clifton teenager Shelby Turl is proving herself to truly be an elite horsewoman following outstanding performances at two competitions in Sydney, including the national championships.

Earlier this year, Shelby, a Year 12 student from Clifton State High School, embarked on an exciting new chapter in her equestrian journey, travelling to Sydney for the first time to compete at the prestigious East Coast Arabian Championships with her horse LP.

Shelby’s mother Taryn said the lead-up to the competition was anything but smooth, with a troublesome hoof abscess threatening to derail the trip entirely.

“Through careful management, determination, and a little bit of luck, Shelby and LP overcame the challenge just in time to step into the arena - and what a performance they delivered,” Taryn said.

“Their debut at the East Coast Arabian Championships saw them bring home a remarkable collection of titles across a wide variety of disciplines, showcasing their talent and strong partnership.”

Shelby was awarded Champion in the categories of Non Pro Ridden Mare, Ridden Purebred Mare, Youth Dressage, Youth Western, Youth Working Stock Horse, Purebred Show Hunter and Purebred Freestyle.

She was Reserve Champion in Open Stock Horse, Youth Purebred Led, Youth Purebred Ridden and Supreme Youth Versatility.

The Sydney adventures for Shelby and LP did not end there.

In April, they returned to compete at the Australian Arabian National Championships, an event that celebrates the best of the breed from across the country.

“Not only did they once again compete successfully, but they were also invited to star in the event’s spectacular opening ceremony,” Taryn said.

“In a particularly special moment, LP was announced as the Australian Purebred Ambassador of the Year, an honour decided by the board of the Arabian Horse Society of Australia at the beginning of the year and officially awarded at the show.”

The title recognises an outstanding Purebred Arabian that exemplifies versatility, quality, and contribution to the breed’s image.

Shelby and LP continued their success in the ring with several major accolades, including Australian National Champion Non-Pro Purebred Ridden Mare, Purebred Show Hunter Mare and Novice Youth Dressage and Reserve Australian National Champion Youth Purebred Ridden.

“Shelby’s achievements are a testament to her hard work, resilience, and unwavering commitment to her goals,” Taryn said.

“We are incredibly proud to celebrate her success and look forward to seeing what’s next for this talented young rider.”
