'Stoneleigh' claims 10th straight victory
Jackson ‘Stoneleigh’ Griffiths successfully defended his Australasian Welterweight Title before a highly vocal and full charged crowd at the Town Hall.
Jackson defeated Victoria’s Hunter Ioane by unanimous decision after eight hard three-minute rounds. It was his 10th win from 10 professional fights.
“He was definitely my toughest opponent to date,” Jackson said.
He was a fierce opponent - he notched 19 knockouts from 19 amateur fights before he turned pro.
Jackson said the support of the home crowd and his corner with coaches Gary Ruhle and Brad Smith kept him on track.
“Having a great corner definitely helps, with their knowledge and ability to read a fight,” he said.
Danes player Jed Garrett also won his amateur heavy weight fight on the night in what was just his fifth fight.
And then came the victory walk across to the Pittsworth Hotel Motel...
“It’s such a nice feeling when you’re walking across the road holding the belts and you’ve got Brad and Gary and Brendon and your brothers there and Jed, he’s one of my best mates, and to have that, I reckon was pretty good.
”The crowd was cheering and they made a tunnel for us...it was a good feeling,” he said.
Brad said the town had gotten behind the locals.
