Stunning Clifton debut for Ascot Lodge

Despite her long odds, Fanci Fleur stormed home in the first race of this year’s Clifton Cup meeting, a joyous win for the Ascot Equine Lodge stud based near East Greenmount.

A four-year-old mare, Fanci Fleur is trained by Brooke Ainsworth of Beaudesert.

Ridden by Jockey Hannah Richardson, she comfortably won the 1000m PB Agrifood Maiden Plate, with 11 starters, by nearly three lengths.

Ainsworth has had success in Clifton before, winning a double as a jockey in 2021 with Bobby Axelrod and then Reset’s Son in the Clifton Cup.

Most of Fanci Fleur’s owners live on the Darling Downs including her breeders, the majority owners, Bob and Nick Hamill.

Ascot Lodge has bred four race horses since 2023 yet this was the first appearance in a racing capacity at Clifton.

Owner Bob Hamill is somewhat known around Clifton for talking up his stable so there were a few punters (particularly at Raff’s) who were pleased with themselves for listening, given the sizeable return on investment, especially from one bookmaker.
