The Enduring Friendship of the Governor’s Wife and his Mistress

Ann Inett and Anna Josepha King forged a most unlikely friendship born from their shared responsibility for sons, Norfolk and Sydney.


The convict ship Lady Penrhyn departed England in 1787 with 104 female convicts. The vast majority had committed only petty crimes often driven by poverty. Every women had to find a way to survive in a brutal penal settlement vastly out numbered by men.
