Tragic crash leaves teen in critical condition

Police are calling for witnesses to come forward after an 18-years-old Westbrook teenager was taken to hospital after a cattle truck and the utility in which she was travelling collided on the Oakey Cooyar Road at Highgrove on Tuesday last week.

The teenager’s Mazda BT-50 travelling southbound, and a B-double cattle
truck, travelling northbound collided just before 2pm on Tuesday, December 2nd.

Witnesses at the scene said the cattle truck was fully stocked and en-route to Kilcoy.

Shortly after the crash, a Triple Zero call for help was received, with fire engines and ambulance service vehicles seen travelling through Oakey at speed.

The 18-years-old woman was trapped by her legs and upper body on the dashboard, unable to remove herself from the vehicle.

Two Queensland Fire Department crews stabilised the vehicle, and used hydraulic cutting equipment to remove the doors and the B-pillar to extricate the victim.

When emergency services assessed the teenage patient, it became obvious to them that transport to Brisbane was needed, given the seriousness of the injuries.

The LifeFlight helicopter was tasked by Retrieval Services Queensland at 2.36pm and landed at around 3.10pm in a nearby paddock on the eastern side of Oakey Cooyar Road.

Two LifeFlight critical care doctors and a Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) flight paramedic then worked with local QAS paramedics to stablise the patient.

She was treated for significant leg injuries and flown to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a life-threatening condition, with the helicopter taking off from Highgrove just after 4.30pm.

The driver of the B-Double truck, a 35-years-old Dalby man, was treated for a minor hand laceration but did not require transport to hospital.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the crash and in particular anyone who may have rendered assistance to the 18-years-old woman at the scene to come forward.

Investigations are ongoing.
