TRC climbs on board plans to help save koalas
Australians concerned about the survival of our native fauna, in particular the much loved koala, will be heartened by a recent Toowoomba Regional Council announcement that it intends to engage in a plan to help map the koala population in the Region.
With koala populations declining TRC Environment and Community Committee Portfolio Lead, Cr Tim McMahon said urgent action was required to better understand the population numbers within the Toowoomba Region.
“A koala is such an iconic animal of Australia and we need to be doing everything we can to protect these animals,” Cr McMahon said.
“While it’s believed the koala is prevalent through-out the Toowoomba Region, the reality is the total extent of the numbers and their exact locations are not known.
“This is why it’s so important we undertake a mapping exercise to find the precise details that will then make it easier for us to look at ways to provide protection.”
Cr McMahon said the Federal Government has launched a $224.5 million Saving Native Species Program and implementation of the Threatened Species Action Plan (2022 -2025).
“To get some funding through a program like this would be crucial to under-take baseline population mapping of koalas across the Toowoomba region,” he said.
“We have passionate residents who are already doing work in this space and it’s envisaged this would compliment the work being done by our community groups who are undertaking a koala count this month to raise further awareness of our numbers.
”We will continue to work with all levels of government for the conservation of the koala in the Toowoomba Region.”
