Uncoached boy wins national athletics championships medals

Twelve-years-old Oakey boy Aeidyn Wallace, who had never competed in athletics before this year, has won medals at the School Sport Australia Track & Field Championship in the multi-class category.

Multi-class events  are specifically designed to allow athletes with disabilities to compete at a high level, with a potential pathway to the Paralympics.

Aeidyn qualified for nationals, by representing the Darling Downs successfully at the recent Queensland Championships in Townsville, where he ran in the 100m and 200m, and competed in long jump, shot put and the medley relay in the T20 category.

It was in the shotput and relay events, where he excelled, finishing third in the former with a throw of 6.23m, and winning the latter, with his Darling Downs team.

Aeidyn then went off to Nationals to compete at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, finishing 7th with a throw of 6.78m in the shotput (a personal best), and winning medals with Queensland in the combined 4x100 relay (gold), and in the medley relay (bronze).

Following his successful trip, mum Nikki says Aeidyn, who doesn’t have a coach, now wants to continue in athletics.

She thanked friend and sponsor Neville Cherry for stepping in to make the trip happen.

“I’d like to thank Neville Cherry Pest Control who gave a donation to cover the costs,” she said.

“Without it, we wouldn’t have been able to go down.”
