Unveiling of refurbished WWI plaque
An old plaque, found by volunteers at Pittsworth’s Pioneer Village earlier this year, has been refurbished and was re-dedicated at the Village on the morning of Monday, 20 October.
The plaque carries the names of eight local World War I soldiers killed in action.
The volunteers found it under a tree but it was in poor condition.
It was passed on to the local Sub-Branch of the R.S.L. for investigation into its origins and possible refurbishment.
Vice President of the Pittsworth R.S.L. Sub-Branch, Nev Cullen took up the challenge of refurbishing the plaque with the assistance of the Pittsworth and District Men’s Shed, of which he is a member.
Now the job has been done and the plaque has been returned to the Pioneer Village where it sits beneath the shade of one of the many trees at the site.
On Monday, two members of a family related to one of the war victims named on the plaque unveiled the restored piece.
Robert Trott and Gary Mann were given the honour of jointly carrying out the unveiling as the plaque was re-dedicated during a small ceremony.
Mr Trott and Mr Mann are related to Charles J. Mann, who was a member of the 15th Battalion in the Australian Infantry Force (A.I.F.).
Other names on the plaque are:
Cpl. Michael Scanlon (47th Bn.),
Pvt. Patrick D. Scanlon (42nd Bn.)
Pvt. Harold G. Vickers (31st Bn.)
Pvt. Frederick J. Daniell (25th Bn.)
Pvt. Harold E. Daniell (42nd Bn.)
Pvt. Oliver Booth (15th Bn.)
Pvt. Walter R. Barlow (42nd Bn.)
