Oakey RSL Sub-Branch President and “Nasho” Chris Markham said it was a poignant time for him and others who had served in the conflict.

“It brings back a lot of memories of mates,” he said.

“We did the job we were sent to do by our Government.”

Mr Markham said the experiences of many Vietnam veterans had not always been happy ones.

“I was pelted with fruit and vegetables by mothers at the airport in Brisbane.

“They were taking their anger out on the wrong people - we weren’t the ones who had sent their sons off.”
