Weaving new traditions

Millmerran Arts Council has this month welcomed Pittsworth’s Barbara Walker for traditional weaving workshops and an exhibition of her intricate work.

The exhibition follows a recent workshop for adults where Barbara, a Wiradjuri  woman from Wagga Wagga who has called Pittsworth home for many years now,  shared her knowledge of and passion for the traditional weaving techniques of her indigenous heritage.

A second workshop this Wednesday, for children this time, has already booked out.

Arts Council president Angela Slater said organisers were delighted with the response to its most  recent events.

“Barbara Walker’s basket weaving workshop welcomed 15 members of the community who took away their colourful creations, with a few participants commenting what a great way to learn a new skill and get to know others in the community,” she said.

“Barbara’s exhibition has amazed library visitors, showcasing the intricacies of her weaving through the colourful and unique creations on display.”

In another event, the Millmerran Cultural Centre was filled last week with more than 250 school children for the storybook classic, The Wind in the Willows in a RAVA Productions page to stage adaptation.

The exhibition continues until August 1 at the Millmerran Library on Herbert Street, which is open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
