Westbrook-Wyreema Road works complete
Floodway replacement and improvement works have been finished on Westbrook-Wyreema Road over Westbrook Creek.
The $1.3 million project was the third to be delivered by Toowoomba Regional Council under the Betterment Program as part of the wider 2022 Flood Recovery Program.
Assistance for these projects is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.
Queensland Minister for Disaster Recovery Ann Leahy said Toowoomba’s $11.8 million Betterment program was a significant investment in the future of the region.
“Betterment is the keystone to Queensland’s disaster recovery and resilience,” Ms Leahy said.
“Building roads back stronger to better withstand extreme weather is fundamental to our commitment to protect Queenslanders and keep communities safe.”
Toowoomba Regional Council Construction and Maintenance (Infrastructure Services) portfolio spokesperson, Cr Carol Taylor, said the works had significantly improved the flood resilience of the road, with upgraded culverts and drainage infrastructure in place to better withstand future weather events.
“This Betterment project has seen the floodway reconstructed to a more resilient and sustainable standard, while realigning the original culvert with the road centre line to improve safety for road users,” Cr Taylor said.
“The improvements were made possible through Betterment funding aimed at restoring and upgrading infrastructure damage that was sustained across our Region during the flood events in early 2022.
“These works have been delivered internally by Council’s own Construction and Maintenance team.
“Each completed Betterment project helps to strengthen our road network and build community resilience.
“We thank the residents and road users for their support and understanding while these vital works were carried out.
“We know how important these connections are, and we’re pleased to see this section of road now upgraded to a higher standard,” Cr Taylor said.
