WWI plaque discovered
Recently, volunteers at the Pittsworth Pioneer Village discovered a plaque underneath one of the trees in the grounds, dedicated to the memory of eight local World War I soldiers killed in action.

The plaque was in very poor condition with rotting woodwork and missing letters.
Subsequently, the plaque was placed into the hands of the Pittsworth RSL Sub-Branch for further investigation into its origins and possible refurbishment.
The RSL members quickly recognised the significance of the plaque and its value to the history of the area.
Nev Cullen, Vice President of the RSL Sub-Branch, accepted the challenge of refurbishing the plaque with the assistance of the Pittsworth and District Men’s Shed, where he is also a member.
The work has now been completed, and in consultation with all involved parties, the plaque will be placed in honour within the grounds of the Pioneer Village.
The date on the plaque is 20th October 1917, and it was agreed that the re-dedication of the plaque will be on the anniversary of that date in just a few week’s time.
The list of the names on the plaque (with some questionable spelling errors) are: Michael Scanlon, Patrick Scanlon, Harold Vickers, Fredrick Daniell, Harold Daniell, Oliver Booth, Charles Mann and Walter Barlow.
In honour of the fallen soldiers, the Pittsworth RSL Sub-Branch and Pittsworth Pioneer Village, invite all relatives, family, friends and acquaintances of the soldiers, and community members, to attend the unveiling and re-dedication of the plaque at the Pioneer Village on Monday, 20th October at 10am.
